This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery, Nikka's first distillery built in 1934. The founder Masataka Takersuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky making.
Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness orientating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the ageing process.
Nikka Yoichi 20 Years Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky 余市20年日本單一麥芽威士忌 700mL
Volume: 700mL
ABV: 52%
Color: Deep copper
Aroma: Big notes of cedar wood up front. Cigar boxes. Tobacco leaves. Old leather. Nice to see there’s also an estery note (nail polish) but this fades away quickly. Dark forest fruits remain. After that, some earthy smoke, burnt cake and a little tar. Hints of dried mushrooms and soft spices.
Palate: Creamy and flavoursome. Cabbage rawness with nugmet sweet and pungent. Masculine and rush of flavour, eye-watering spicy dram.
Finish: Gloriously long. Well rounded and high on mark. Loud and solid dram packed with loads of precious components. Gum numbing. Chewy.
